Oh NO... the cost of living is VERY HIgh now... if you can even find a place at that

I'm in New Orleans now, and you're right about one thing everyone is hiring. I passed up a McDonald's and the window said now hiring $9.75 an hour. Before Katrina it was about $620 an hour. And were just talking McDonald's here so if you come down here, you'll be able to make some money. I know construction is big down here right now. Lots of people are coming down here to help rebuild the city(tear down homes, remove asbestos, build homes, clear cars, etc) and they make major bank. People quit jobs all the time down here because they just keep getting better and better offers. So if you come here you'll do well for yourself. everyone is hiring. But don't move to the actual city of New Orleans, that wouldn't be too smart. Move to the (West Bank) suburban area 10 minutes outside of the actual city. That area got hit too, but everyone stays here. Houses- the prices have gone up. For a house I could have gotten for $85,000, the price is now $175,000 seriously. People are taking advantage that people lost their homes and need new ones, and that many people are moving here and need places to stay. I suggest getting an apartment secure before moving down here. I don't know how much rent is but you should be able to afford it.

Well, I'm sure you've figured it out by now that there is a plethora of work to be done in New Orleans and relatively little infrastructure to support those who come to work here. However, with more and more people giving up and leaving the city every day, I've been seeing more and more signs that say, FOR RENT. However, be careful, most landlords have had dollar signs in their eyes since Katrina and are taking advantage of the lack of habitable housing (ah good ol' supply versus demand economics) and raising rents as much as 100% to 200% what they were before Katrina. Good luck.

There is all kinds of work available and no one to do it. Housing is a problem, and the cost of living has gone up. Check out craigslist.com and click on the link for New Orleans in the column on the right. That will lead you to all sorts of listings for jobs, apartments, houses for retn, etc. I think nola.com also has a jobs section. Make sure you both get a tetanus shot before coming into the city. If you are prone to sinus problems or allergies, be prepared for dirty air, there is mold everywhere and all the trees and plants are blooming. It hasn't rained in months and the air is thick with pollen, dust, and mold.

I just went to New Orleans for Mardi Gras it was pretty amazing. But one place that hires at 16 is Dominos Pizza. It was my first job and I've been here 3 years so far, started when I was 16! You have a chance to make some money and have a lot of opportunities for advancement. You can be an insider, but to be a driver you must be 18 with 2 years of driving experience.

You could consider a work from home jobs. With this, all you need is your computer. No resume, No experience, No permit. They are free to join. Here is a great idea: Make a free blog at blogger about something you are good at or truly interested in, and than put adsense on it, bring people to your blog, each time your ads get clicked you'll earn money. I can assure that you will love working on it. If you want more info let me know OR visit http://www.make-money-blogging.biz

Has Ability Builds, in partnership with Habitat For Humanity, done any work in New Orleans?
This is a relatively new division of Ability Awareness founded by Chet Cooper, the publisher of "Ability Magazine". Since there has been (and will continue to be) so much construction/reconstruction in New Orleans, I would like to know if any accommodations have be made for people with disabilities. http://www.abilityawareness.org/abilitybuilds.htm http://www.abilitymagazine.com/

You can get a job doing just about anything in New Orleans right now. People are making $10-$15 per hour at fast food restauraunts. They also offer $500-$6000 signing bonuses. I would visit www.nola.com and look at the help wanted section.

Absolutely. Most GCs want relable crews that show up every day, preferable sober, and will do good work. I would search the white pages for companiies that do the kind of work that you are interested in and give them a call. They may help you get down here, but be prepared for a pretty severe housing shortage. Pay is high for this kind of work, but only relative to pre-K New Orleans rates. Thanks for wanting to come help us out!
