try on line. yahoo's home page has a hot job link& honestly u know there's bound to be a lot of construction work available in that area. you can also do a general web search for jobs in new orleans. good luck!

I have given links to companies recruiting for these jobs and there are a lot of them. Pay is great and demand is high. But, sadly someone has deemed one of these links commercial and reported me. Good Luck. Yahoo and other sites are too broad, you get a lot of spam, adware, malware, and phishing expeditions, etc. and those of us in the Professions use totally free specialized sites/portals. Sorry I could not help. Maybe that wicki thing could help you, as a lot of people use it when referring.

About Moving to New Orleans for work? Where should I live

Moving to New Orleans for work? Where should I live?
I am taking a job in New Orleans and I have a wife and a 2 year old. She will be a stay at home mom and i want her and my son to be safe. Where should i look for housing? I don't mind driving up to 30 minutes. I am taking a job in Metairie and I don't mind driving about 20-30 minutes. Where are some nice neighborhoods to look into?? Also, what are some good private schools? My wife is an x ray tech and would be looking for a part time job. Any suggestions?

Considering that MOST of New Orleans is still in a fragile state - your options shouldnt be that lengthy. Staying near tourist areas may not be as peaceful as you need it to be - try explaining the drunken college kid debauchery to your kids...LOL And the residential areas surrouding the tourist parts arent ummm, "scenic". Between the vacant lots, & desolate landscape, its not so pretty. The areas that have been rebuilt are no doubt nice...I'm not sure what the going rate of rent/ownership would be, but if you;re not willing to wait for New Orleans to become full reviatlized, then move to a nearby suburb. Regarding safety...get a security system & tell your wife to practice common sense....lock car doors, windows & home doors when not in use. Close curtains at night, keep purse/wallet secure on her body - do big bank transactions indoors & not at an ATM - that's all you need no matter where you live.

Welcome! Actually, your options ARE quite lenghty. I really hate it when people who have little knowledge of New Orleans answer questions about the city. Most of New Orleans is "safe". Almost all of the violent crime (which is what makes the news) happens within the illegal drug community and you don't need to worry about it unless you plan to buy or sell crack cocaine. However, you do tend to get what you pay for in terms of neighborhood. That is true all across the metro area and not just in the City. The New Orleans area is also geographically huge and - despite your willingness to commute - you should probably look first in the areas around wherever you expect to work. Please edit or re-post your question with a bit more info regarding where you expect to be working. You could also re-post your question n the New Orleans section of the Travel category to get more answers form locals.

Any Catholic school in New Orleans is a good choice, though they can be relatively pricey but really are the only options given the state of the school system down here. If you're working in Metairie, it's better to live in Metairie because traffic is brutal around that area during rush hours. I'm from the Westbank, so I don't know that much about Metairie other than I tend to stay away due to the traffic. I hope that helped and thanks for coming down to the Big Easy!

About Are the people that are moving to New Orleans to work qualified to live in one of the FEMA trailers

Are the people that are moving to New Orleans to work qualified to live in one of the FEMA trailers?
My husband and I want to move to N.O. to work (we were thinking of this even before Katrina). We just would like to know if we would "qualify" for a FEMA trailer, or are those just for homeowners? Thanks so much!

I do not think so. I think it is only for those families that lived here prior to the storm. The city is currently looking to re-vamp 10,000 aprtments for rent. Be patient. There is plenty of rental property on out lying areas. The suberbs that I live in have plenty to offer and it is only 30 mins from New Orleans without traffic. With traftic it is about an hour.

no

No. You would have to have already applied for FEMA help and be on the waiting list. You could get your own trailer, but you would still need a place to put it and have water and sewerage hookups. Start looking for apartments, they are coming available every day and being snapped up fast.

There is work in New Orleans - but before you and your husband decide to move there you need to ask yourselves if you are willing to gamble on losing your lives or everything you have in moving there should another major hurricane hit. Hurricanes are getting worse every year since the year 2000. They expect possibly even MORE this year. Just something to think about. You wouldn't get me in there for any amount of money.

I responded to you other question, but this guy said something true just now. Hurricanes do come every year (Hurricane season) so that is a downside. But we know about them before they happen. Smart people get flood insurance, wind insurance, & insurance in general. You see people on the news pissed off at FEMA and others, and I'll bet you most of the people that are still pissed didn't have any flood or wind insurance. So to get any worries out of you. They warn us when a hurricane is coming, and what category it is. They let us know if we should evacuate or not. It is all over the news also, its not like they say it one time and then forget it. The West Bank (New Orleans suburbs) like I said before, it got hit but not like New Orleans. Wind damage was the worst over here. I hope you move to my city, it is still a wonderful place. People still goto New Orleans to have a good time. But don't take my word for it,come down and see how it is for yourself.

Consider the fact that New Orleans wasn't directly hit by the hurricane...South Mississippi was and we were completely desimated. New Olreans actually got the dry western side of the storm. I love New Orleans, but if they ever get hit as directly as we did here on the Mississippi Gulf Coast, I can't imagine what would be left of it.
